Artist Statement

I do art because it is a way to relax during the day and express myself creatively. I enjoy making the pieces I make and experimenting with new techniques. Ceramics specifically allows me to do this because with 3-D forms, there are so many ways to manipulate and alter art. My goals as a ceramic artist is to master using the wheel and make my work as neat as possible.

In my work, I try to challenge myself with different forms, designs and techniques. I enjoy trying new things and I want to make my pieces have a wide variety. Sometimes when a piece comes out differently than I imagined it to, I make decisions in ways to alter it to look the way I wanted it to, or create a different look to it completely. I usually hand build my projects, although I have tried some on the wheel. I also really like playing with texture and experimenting with glazes. I would like to learn new glaze techniques though, especially in high fires. The themes of my work vary, some from life experiences and some from different inspirations.

My current work has improved a lot over the years. I am more open to trying new things, making pieces on a larger scale, and thinking of original ideas. Whereas my prior work was more basic forms and glazes, I have tried to incorporate different materials and forms into this year's projects.
